The International Film Festival Rotterdam is becoming somewhat of a tradition for me and le boyfriend. I first went there when I started studying in Rotterdam and since I love a good indie or art house flick, this festival is right up my alley. It’s also a nice way to get best of both worlds: films on Saturday and fashion shows on Sunday.
The films we went to see were:
Gare du Nord
A film about a student who writes a thesis about the people who are ‘residents’ of Gare du Nord: the cool boys who loiter around, the small shop owners, the people passing through and especially the lady who suffers from cancer and passes through for her treatments, who he starts an affair with. The idea of the movie was nice, but the film felt a bit too long for me.
Ping Pong Summer
An American indie film about a young teenage boy, Rad Miracle, who loves ping pong and hiphop. He’s going on a family vacation to Ocean City, where he makes new friends and enemies. The climax of the film is when Rad plays a ping pong match against the town bully. The film is set in the 80s and has a very carefree vibe about it, which very well displays how you felt at that age. There are a lot of unexpected, absurd jokes in it, which makes it a joy to watch. I definitely recommend seeing it when you can!
Once Upon A Time In Shanghai
This is a Hong Kong kung fu movie, set in 1930s Shanghai. The story is set around a mob war and the main character is a kind man with a dream to make it big in Shanghai, who just so happens to be very strong. He unexpectedly befriends the wealthy man who rules town and together they make a plan to fight the Triad mobsters and their Japanese friends. I normally don’t really like action movies, but I guess a kung fu movie is more like a dance movie, since it has a similar choreography. I also really loved the Matrix-like style of filming the fighting scenes. The art-direction of this movie was sublime, it has a very high contrast/low saturation filter over it, which gives off a really cool retro vibe. Another movie I recommend watching.
Hope you have a nice Sunday, I’m off to Fashion Week again!
