Oh London, pretty London. What’s not to love about the city? I don’t even remember how many times I’ve visited the British capital. Whenever I am in London I always try visiting something new. On the one hand I avoid tourist places, but on the other hand I like seeing at least one attraction or landmark at a time. To me it kind of completes the experience. So if you have a trip to London coming up, here are my 5 top tourist things you should do. Try to cram as much as you can into one day, so you can get on with all the other fun things London has to offer!
Shop at Oxford Street
Oxford Street is London’s most famous shopping street. It can get very crowded and that’s why I try to avoid it most times. I love shopping in other areas, like Covent Garden, Shoreditch/Boxpark or Soho. But there is one very important reason why you have to visit Oxford Street. I’m talking about the best shop in the UK and quite possibly the world: Topshop. The Oxford Circus store is huge, so you might wanna save a couple of hours for this visit alone 😉
Try street food at Brick Lane market
The least known attraction on this list. Brick Lane is not discovered by the vast majority of tourists yet, which means it isn’t as crowded as most tourist attractions. You probably heard of Camden, right? Camden is well-known for its street markets and alternative atmosphere. These days about 90% of the Camden visitors are tourists, so last time I was there it did not make for a nice experience. That’s why I’d recommend Brick Lane over Camden. The area has an indie feel to it as well and the street food is absolutely amazing. There’s a lot of street art around Brick Lane, so it’s kind of like visiting a free museum 🙂 This is also where I shot these outfit pictures!
Take pictures in a red phone booth
These days your city break isn’t complete without some awesome pics on Insta / Snapchat / Facebook or whatever social media floats your boat. Taking a picture in or near a red phone booth is a bit of a tourist cliché, but that’s not the point. Red phone booths have become such an icon that even your other-worldy aunt will see you’ve been to London. Your phone booth pic will be the perfect profile picture, giving you bragging rights for weeks.
Visit Tate Modern Museum
I promise you you’ll love Tate Modern, even if you’re not a museum person. The art that is on display isn’t too high-brow, think Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and the likes. These artists are still very popular and can be found on all kinds of clothing and interior items. Visiting Tate will be an entertaining history lesson and you’ll leave the building feeling inspired. The best part: Tate Modern has free entrance.
Go in the London Eye
London can be quite overwhelming, making it very necessary to take a little break every once in a while. During my last trip I went in the London Eye for the very first time. London Eye is that huge ferris wheel near the Big Ben. You know, the one that’s on every London post card. So yeah, definitely one of the most tourist things to do in London! It’s quite expensive – 22 pounds – and I’m not sure how I survived, giving my fear of heights and all. But once I was up there I really enjoyed the view. It’s pretty awesome to see London from up high and it really is an experience you won’t regret.
