After briefly flirting with reading again, I finally pushed through my intentions and read a book. I went with #GIRLBOSS as I was really curious to find out what all the fuss was about. I’ve been seeing this book pop up all over Instagram (mine included) and some girls are already treating it as their bible. I can’t deny that female role models like Sophia are scarce, so it’s good to have a book like this on the market. Plus I’m a big fan of Nasty Gal, they stock some of the coolest brands and their whole brand identity is pretty rad. And since a lot of you asked me what I thought of the book I’m doing a little book review. This is the first time I’m doing something like this, so here goes.
#GIRLBOSS reads like a modern Cinderella story in which dumpster-diving outsider Sophia, who has ADD and can’t keep a single shitty job, ends up running a million dollar business. The book comes with a lot of anecdotes that seem very unlikely to come from a future CEO. And that’s exactly what makes her the perfect underdog- which definitely sits well with s, and its target audience’s, edginess.
The book takes you through Sophia’s whole process of building her own business. From buying Chanel jackets at garage sales to scouting models and clients on MySpace. #GIRLBOSS features a detailed account of everything, which makes it feel like you were right beside her writing vintage dress descriptions on Ebay and hiring her first employee. She’s pretty open about all of it, which makes you realize that Rome (or in this case ) wasn’t built in one day.
Being an outsider she was used to doing things on her own and as such this is how Sophia built her business. Her lack of education makes it sound like her success is attainable for everyone, as long as you have set goals and the right attitude. She makes some cool and inspiring points, though sometimes it feels like she’s repeating herself. Sophia’s writing style is witty and sharp and comes with lots of inspirational quotes.
Here are some that stuck with me:
Be your own idol.
Don’t live like a CEO when you’re still a sandwich artist.
Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.
The answer to the question ‘How did she do it?’ is probably what every young fan is hoping to find out by reading this book. Well, Miss Amoruso is one mean marketing machine and this book is one of her many marketing tools. #GIRLBOSS gives a little peak into her world, which is really cool. But in the end it’s her telling her own story, so it’s hard to find out if everything went exactly the way she tells it, or if she’s romanticized a thing or two. I’d go with the latter.
As it says on the back cover ‘Sophia Amoruso is building a fashion empire’ and this bestselling book is definitely giving her an extra push to the top. That doesn’t mean it isn’t an enjoyable read. So yes, I’d definitely recommend reading this book. And take it with a grain of salt, just like Sophia did with any advice that has ever been given to her.
