TUESDAY TIPS: HOW TO EDIT PICTURES FOR INSTAGRAM

My post popular channel right now is Instagram (currently at around 30K followers). I always go for a certain aesthetic in my feed and get a lot of questions on how I edit those Instagram pictures. Now obviously I don’t want you to copy me, but it might give you a nice insight on how to get a signature look in your Instagram feed. If I were to describe my look I’d say it’s very light, colourful and dreamy. To obtain this look I only use Afterlight (an editing app available in the app store for €0,79 – totally worth it) and a couple of Instagram editing features. In today’s post I’m going to be taking you through the whole process. Enjoy! And if you’ll be using this tutorial be sure to tag it #adashoffashtips, would love to see your pictures!

INSTAGRAM BEFORE AFTER

Ready? Let’s do this!

instagram filters

1. Open up the image in Afterlight.
Select Brightness and make it as bright as possible.
2. Select the rainbow icon for filters. There’s a lot of filters to pick and I suggest to experiment with them so you can find out which one appeals to you most.
3. Not all filters work for every picture, so I used the Fusion option to record a couple of my favourites to use on different kind of pictures. This isn’t something I put in this tutorial, but something for you to try out. For this picture I went for the Cave filter and used it at about 60%.

4. As I said I like my pics colourful, so I always add in a little more saturation.
5. To get a dreamy feel I usually add in a Dusty filter.
6. Dusty filter #08 is my fave, so this is what I used here as well. I love how it gives the illusion of natural light.

7. I like to keep my feed clean, so I always add a white border to avoid a messy feel.
8. With this option you can also pick a different colour, go for a rounded border or add a white background. Really handy.
9. Andddd… save! To save you that much needed space on your phone it’s best to save the picture in medium quality. Definitely high enough for an Instagram picture anyway. This time I went for maximum quality because I knew I wanted to use this picture on my blog.

10. Open up the picture in Instagram.
11. I never post it right away, but always go to the editing panel first.
12. My first edit is to add in some extra Brightness. For some reason the Instagram option works a little different than the one in Afterlight.
13. A lot of pictures have a warm temperature, which can make them look a little dirty. Thats’s why I use the temperature option to make the picture more blue-ish.
14. The last edit is to brighten the accents to give an even lighter effect to the picture.
15. Annnd you’re done! Come up with a cool caption – this can sometimes be trickier than editing the picture… next tutorial material maybe? – and rake in those likes!
