When I started out this blog I never knew I would meet so many interesting people. One of those people I got to know recently is independent fashion designer Sabine Staartjes. You might run into her at a creative market or festivals like Milkshake. Her colourful designs put a smile on my face and I was curious to find out more about what inspires her. So I dropped by her little studio in Amsterdam for an interview.
Why did you want to become a fashion designer?
Being creative started at a very early age. Everyone in my family is creative and my mother was a seamstress, so that’s how I first came in touch with fashion. When I came to an age when shopping started to get fun I realized that nothing available in shops really suited my taste. So I figured, why not design things myself? What I love about being a fashion designer is that I’m able to tell stories and make people happy while looking good at the same time.
What inspires you?
Remarkable personal experiences. My last collection was inspired by the worst and best period in my life. While I was busy preparing my graduation fashion show – the highlight of my career thus far – my father was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy. This contradictory time really influenced my designs. I chose to work with balloons: they stand for luck and parties, but pop easily. I also used gradients in my designs: colourful at the top, fading colours at the bottom.
Who is your favourite designer?
I don’t really have a favourite designer as I tend not to look at other designers too much; I don’t want to be unconsciously influenced by them. I can however be very proud of other designers. If I had to choose it would be Viktor & Rolf. They’re a jewel in the crown of Dutch design.
This balloon jacket is typically Sabine Staartjes. It’s feminine and makes you feel happy!
Which item is typically Sabine Staartjes?
My balloon jacket, because it symbolizes organised chaos. All colours have been ranked in order and you won’t see these balloons on any other jacket, they’re pretty unique. The shape of the jacket is very feminine and when you look at it it makes you feel happy. Happiness is important to me. The message of this jacket is „Let go”, like if you were to blow all of your sorrows into a balloon and just let that balloon float away.
What do you want to achieve in your career?
A lot! My own shop with a studio and hangout where people can chill and shop at the same time. I’d love to create my own unique platform. To build my brand and run into people who are wearing my designs. To sum it up I just want keep following this road and get bigger along the way.
